Bakau Lower Basic School Gets New Toilets

In an answered cry for help, KingEdwardSchool, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England came to the aid of BakauLowerBasicSchool. The need this time was for the renovation of a toilet block, which was completely ruined and useless.

KingEdwardSchool has a long relationship with BakauLowerBasicSchool and liaised with UK charity Friends of Gambian Schools (FROGS) to get the job done.

According to Sally Reader, spokesperson for (FROGS), the toilet was in a dreadful condition and unusable when she first inspected it with her team. “The roof was made of asbestos, broken and in need of removal and replacement. All the plumbing needed to be removed and the soak away, which unfortunately had been previously damaged and used a rubbish tip, needed to be emptied, relined and the top slab replaced. All the sanitary ware was broken,” she said.

The school now has a new toilet block, with tiled floors and toilet surrounds, a new roof and hygienic soak away.

In official handing over the renovated block to the school recently, on behalf of the donors, FROGS representative appealed to the school authorities to keep the toilets in good condition, as a dirty environment endangers the health of both teachers and pupils.

Mrs. Reader thanked KMC through Mr Edi Njai for providing them with tractors to remove the debris.

She revealed that the work cost the donor over D100,000.

For his part, the Head Teacher of the school Mr. Alhagie Dukureh commended the donor for the kind gesture.

The ceremony was attended by parent teacher association members and the cluster monitor for the area Mr. Jobe who also applauded the initiative.
